How to track Instagram DM link clicks
Short links, clicks per automation, and a country breakdown — without a mystery spreadsheet.

If the DM is the storefront, the tap is the conversion. Instagram will not give you a clean “this comment-to-DM made 84 sales” dashboard. You add a short link you control.
Xuios tracked links are on Free. They look like /l/yourcode on your domain and collect clicks plus a coarse country from the request — not an ad-tech profile.
Why bio links are the wrong instrument
A bio link measures “someone left Instagram later.” It does not tell you which automation, which keyword, or which story. When you use one bit.ly for every DM, you are back to a spreadsheet.
Put a different tracked link on:
- the
LINKreel automation - the
PRICEautomation - the story reply automation
- the follow-gated freebie
Then you can say “the story paid, the reel did not.”
How Xuios links work
When you save a URL on an automation, Xuios shortens it. You can also create standalone links for bios. Each click stores a timestamp and a coarse country. The automation’s click count is the one that matters for “did this keyword work?”
Open Links in the dashboard. Copy the short URL. Do not paste the raw destination in the public comment.
What we do not do
We do not build advertising audiences from click IPs. Privacy copy lives on the privacy policy. Country is “enough to know if the drop is US-heavy,” not a dossier.
UTM still works
If you already live in analytics, add UTM parameters on the destination URL before you shorten it. The short link stays clean in the DM; the destination still attributes in your shop.
Example destination: https://you.com/preset?utm_source=instagram&utm_medium=dm&utm_campaign=link-keyword
Failures vs clicks
A send can fail and a click can still happen later from a retry. Read both numbers. High sends, zero clicks: the DM is unclear or the page is slow. Low sends, high click rate: the keyword is tight and the offer is fine — go make more content.
A weekly read of the numbers
Every Monday look at three automations only:
- Highest sends, lowest clicks — rewrite the DM. The keyword works; the sentence does not.
- Lowest sends, high click rate — make more content that uses that keyword. The offer works.
- Follow-gated freebie clicks vs ungated — if gated clicks are higher quality in your shop, keep the door.
If everything is flat, you do not have an analytics problem. You have a content problem.
Short links in stories vs comments
Story DMs get fewer comments and often higher intent. Comment DMs get volume. Track them separately or you will kill the story because “the reel did more clicks” without noticing the story’s click-through is three times higher.
Pricing
Tracked links used to be a Creator unlock in older Xuios builds. They are on Free now, next to 1,000 DMs. You should not have to pay $15/mo to learn whether LINK works.
